The Argentine sensation appeared to be the 'angel' sent down from above to help Louis van Gaal work miracles at Old Trafford.
The
cost of luring him from Real Madrid to Manchester appeared irrelevant
as di Maria produced a string of brilliant performances.
But
in the space of just seven months di Maria has gone from superstar to
super-flop to leave United supporters - and football followers in
general - just what has happened to the man from the mean streets of
Rosario?
The answer is simple.
Di Maria has become the high-profile victim of van Gaal's unpredictable management of the fallen giants.
Di
Maria's alarming dip in form hasn't gone unnoticed, but it has not been
the burning topic of conversation due to the fact there has been
someone else under performing - United captain Wayne Rooney.
But
the two problems are linked because, like Rooney, di Maria has been
made to suffer by van Gaal's insistence on chopping and changing his
tactics and line-ups.
While Rooney has toiled in
midfield, di Maria has done the same in a number of different attacking
roles that have seen him produce seriously sub-standard performances.
Di Maria is under enough pressure as it is without van Gaal making the problem worse.
